About Gabeba Baderoon

Gabeba Baderoon is the author of the collections The Dream in the Next Body (Kwela/Snailpress, 2005), The Museum of Ordinary Life (DaimlerChrysler, 2005) and A Hundred Silences (Kwela/Snailpress, 2006). Her poems also appear in the anthologies Worldscapes (Oxford University Press, 2005) and Ten Hallam Poets (Mews Press, 2005), and in the journals Carapace, New Contrast, Illuminations, Matter and Meridians. She has read at the Berlin Poetry Festival, Poetry Africa in Durban, the Stockholm Poetry Festival and the Calabash International Literary Festival in Jamaica. She held the Guest Writer fellowship at the Nordic Africa Institute in Sweden, the second writer after Ama Ata Aidoo to receive this honour. Gabeba is the recipient of the DaimlerChrysler Award for South African Poetry 2005.

Gabeba grew up in Crawford, Athlone and, like generations of her family, attended Livingstone High School in Claremont, a venerable institution in the Black community. She studied English at the University of Cape Town, receiving a doctorate with a thesis on representations of Islam in South African art, literature and media.

In addition, as a scholar, Gabeba has written on ‘race’ and on art. She has lectured in South Africa, Europe and the United States, and held fellowships at the African Gender Institute at the University of Cape Town, the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies, Pennsylvania State University and Växjö University in Sweden. She has also written for O, SL and Chimurenga magazines.
